A common method involves using the height above touchdown (HAT) published on the approach chart. Dividing the HAT by 300 provides an approximate distance from the runway threshold in nautical miles. Subtracting this distance from the distance to the threshold at the MAP (Missed Approach Point) establishes the VDP. For instance, with a HAT of 600 feet and a MAP located 5 nautical miles from the threshold, the VDP would be approximately 3 nautical miles from the threshold (600/300 = 2; 5 – 2 = 3).
Accurate VDP determination enhances situational awareness and safety during instrument approaches, particularly in non-precision environments. It provides pilots with a visual cue for initiating descent, helping to avoid excessively high or low approaches.
